Working with Narratives for Power BI—the Why Behind Data and Visualizations

The ability to continually offer our customers innovative solutions and first rate service all starts with our team of top-notch specialists. We work hard to have the right team here at DSI, and it’s something we pride ourselves on. We encourage our employees to build their personal brand and become thought leaders.

Recently, one of our Senior Data Analytics Consultant, Rayis Imayev, was interviewed by Narrative Sciences to learn how he’s been using the Narratives for Power BI product to accelerate time and highlight insights found in the Power BI data. Here are a few of the questions they asked him along with his responses.

NS: What sparked your interest in spreading the word about Narratives for Power BI?

RI: A big part of what I do at DSI is hosting Power BI training sessions. I noticed that some of our users struggled to understand the ‘why’ behind the data and visualizations. Using Narrative for Power BI helped our users better understand the role artificial intelligence can take in making information in data more accessible.

NS: What is your favourite part about Narratives for Power BI?

RI: I used to be a marketing analyst; I know first-hand how time-intensive manually analyzing and writing insights about data can be. Narratives for Power BI provides a starting point for the analysis, allowing users like me to spend more time making deeper analyses and performing other high value activities. One of my favourite parts of Narratives for Power BI is its ability to generate critical information that is not apparent by just looking at a chart alone. Analysis that used to take me hours to complete can be done in 30 minutes. That makes me happy.

NS: Can you give an example of how you use Narratives in your Power BI dashboards?

RI: I’m a big fan of leveraging publicly available data to build informative dashboards that help our society better understand how we’re using resources and where we can improve. I’ve included narratives into my dashboards which explain everything, from school performance based on Toronto’s Learning Opportunities Index (LOI) as an index that ranks schools based on measures of external challenges affecting student success, to ridership trends in Chicago’s public transit system. Here’s the dashboard I built. Check it out and explore the data for yourself!
